Hanna
The more Michael describes the trial, the more I dislike Hanna. In part 1 I was not as bothered by Hanna as much since she did not do much harm to him besides leaving without saying goodbye or an explanation. The trial shows Hanna's personality in more detail. She does not give away her emotions through her body language and she seems to isolate herself from the accused women. She makes the trial worse for herself by arguing with certain accusations or making statements that force others to view her as an insensitive person. It is clearly shown that Hanna is selfish and only cares about protecting herself even if she does not know she is actually hurting herself. I am glad that Michael realized that he is better off without her during the trial. The fact that Hanna voluntarily applied to be an SS guard in the camps, knowing that she would be hurting innocent people, made me sick. She shows no regret for what she did at the church. She knew that the keys were in the locks and that the bombs were landing near the church but yet she did not bother to let the women out. It bothers me that someone could be so insensitive towards other people because of what they are told about them. When she asked the judge "so what would you have done?" was horrible. She was being accused of murdering those women and the judge obviously does not believe she was in the right. She makes herself seem idiotic and soulless. Hanna had favorites in the camp, those who were weak and could not work. She knew Michael was weak from hepatitis and took him in, just like she did with the girls in the camp. She had him read to her the same way she mad the girls read to her in the camps. It was suppose to make the girls believe they were at ease and did not have to worry but were later transported and killed. How could someone knowingly send another person to their death for no reason but the fact that they practiced a certain religion?
