Part One

Michael's thoughts are what stood out to me the most while reading the first part of the book. Like any normal teenager, he feels confined and somewhat out of place. Michael tends to point out every flaw there could be in any situation. In the first couple of chapters, I imagined Michael to be the awkward kid who people tend to pick on and the one who always seems to be sick. When he got nervous about who was going to be coming up the stairs while he was waiting for Hanna to come home made me realize how self conscious he is. The fact that after he had sex with Hanna, he felt more confident of himself. What interested me the most about Michael was when he was describing how it felt to be ill and in the sickroom. His imagination was allowed to run wild. Even though he was confined in his room, Michael seemed to make the best of it. To me, Michael seems like a unique kid who is just trying to fit in. Instead of complaining that he was bored of his house and doing nothing about it, like most kids his age, he got out of the house and acquired his goal. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that he believed that his actions, decisions, and thoughts were all independent of each other.
