This book was very controversial to me. I thought it was weird that such a young kid (age 15) was dating a 35 year old. Hanna basically acted like his mom but with benefits, which I found odd. She told him what to do and made him submit to her. "I had caved in after a short struggle when she threatened to send me away and withhold herself." (Page 49) He does whatever she asks and when he upsets her, he comes crawling back and begs for forgiveness. Maybe he's attracted to her because she reminds him of his mom but either way, I find the age gap to be too big.
The only reason I'm not completely opposed to this situation is because it gives him confidence and experience. Being with a woman so often and so intimately makes him more smooth around other girls such as Sophie and makes him more confident about himself. Before Hanna and without Hanna, he probably had no idea how to act around a girl. He was shy and embarrassed when he first met Hanna and didn't know what to do around her. He ended up running out because he was nervous and embarrassed about his emotions.
Sadly, not much good has come out of this relationship; just a lot of misunderstandings, fights, and power struggles. She ended up leaving him without a trace or a word and he's going to deal with hard break for a long time. I only wonder if they will see each other again later in the book.
