Part 1

My immediate reaction of this book was that it is very, very strange. I at first thought that it was Michael who was just a little pervert watching a woman change in her apartment. It isn’t until the bathing scene that the author reveals that it is Hannah who is obviously the disturbed one. From a psychological stand point, women are far fewer noted as molesters than men are and are considered severely, severely mentally disturbed when they are in this role because of their inherent nurturing ways. It absolutely disgusted me that this woman was taking advantage of Michael. Regardless of Michael spying on her and perhaps even coming on to her, it is always, no matter what, the adult’s responsibility to end such inappropriate behavior. Not only encouraging, but engaging in this behavior shows how deranged this Hannah must be. The “shower routine” as described in the book shows to me that Hannah knows that what she is doing is wrong, trying to rid herself and Michael of not only evidence, although any forensics would have been nearly impossible in these ages, but of the filthy acts that she engaged in with him. In no way shape or form do I sympathize with Hanna, but sympathize only with Michael.
