Part One

Although this book is easy to read I do not really understand the characters motifs, especially Hanna's. She meets this sick child when he was only nine years old, not knowing that he would ever come back to say thanks but he eventually does. As soon as he is back and old enough to understand a basic sexual relationship Hanna decides to take advantage of the situation presented. Michael is still young; at 15 years old you can't expect him to understand how relationships work. Hanna, being double his age, obviously knew this but did not seem to mind. Although there is a large age gap that is not what concerns me the most. The fact that Hanna uses him for her own pleasure is what I don't understand. She obviously knows how to manipulate men around her, and if she really is as beautiful as Michael says why would she decide to manipulate a 15 year old boy. He's obviously going to be in love and obsessed with her since she was his first sexual partner and girlfriend, and Hanna knows this which is why she asserts herself knowing that Michael will come begging and apologizing. Although Hanna does treat Michael like a lover she also treats him like a son at the same time, which is extremely disturbing. Her attitude towards him constantly shifts from one extreme to another. I do not know if that is what caused her to leave him, but evidently she didn't care about him the way she said she did if she left without leaving any explanation behind. At times she did seem to be "in love" with Michael but at the same time she seemed sketchy, making it seem as if she was hiding more than just their relationship.
