Although
the book is easy to read and it flows quickly, I have absolutely no idea where
it is heading and what the final outcome is going to be. I am pretty sure that
everyone who reads this book has the same initial response that Hanna is using
Michael for sex and only sex. When one takes the age difference into consideration,
it seems to be the only logical outcome. However, as I read farther on in the
book, Hanna seems to care for Michael. Even though she nods yes when Michael
asks if she loves him, I am not convinced that she is in love with him, but
rather loves him as a mother would love a child. Someone who did not care would
not put up with all the fighting and would definitely not have gotten mad if
Michael pretended to not know who she was. Her constant reference to Michael as
“kid” shows that Hanna still sees Michael as someone younger than herself and
therefore takes advantage of him. She knows that Michael will keep coming back
because he had confused love with lust and she continues to manipulate him into
doing what she wants. Michael is hurt by Hanna’s sudden disappearance, but I think
he just misses the sex in all honesty. When he realizes that he was living in a
bubble, in a fantasy, he will move on and start talking to other girls and
forget about Hanna completely.
