Part 2

After reading part 2, the themes on the paper handed to us make a little bit more sense. Before I was sort of confused about how Nazi war crimes have anything to do with this novel. However, it is revealed that Hana in fact was a prison guard herself. It is very interesting however that Michael attends her trial. It is stated that the reason he goes is because he is a law student. However, we wonder if the real reason he goes is because he is still in love with her.

To me the interesting part comes during the trial. Hanna is faced with the decision wether or not to reveal that she is in fact illiterate. Although it could possibly set her free in her trial, it is her inner secret that she is embarrassed of. However, this little detail explains many parts of the first part of the novel. I was sort of confused why Hanna would have Michael read to her. We now know that it was due to the fact that she could not read it herself. Furthermore, it is in my opinion that the reason why she forced him to keep going to school and becoming more productive in the classroom is so that he did not end up being like her and be illiterate.
